'Managed outbreak' of COVID-19 at University Hospital of Northern BC

Outbreak at PG hospital

Lab-confirmed cases of the COVID-19 virus have been detected among staff at the University Hospital of Northern BC in Prince George, health authorities said Thursday.

Northern Health says the cases are all unrelated, and declared a "managed outbreak" at the the hospital's Family Medicine Unit. It will last until at least Dec. 16, which is two weeks after any potential exposure may have happened, Northern Health said.

"There is no evidence of ongoing transmission of COVID-19 within UHNBC," Northern Health said.

"In this case, there have been individual lab-confirmed cases in staff who may have worked during their potential infectious period, and in some hospitalized patients."

The health authority did not say how many cases have been confirmed among hospital staff.

The announcement came moments after an outbreak was declared at the Gateway Lodge assisted-living residence, also in Prince George.
