Kelowna man sounds alarm over woman going door to door with no mask

Door to door, no mask

UPDATE 9:09 a.m.

Dave Siddon has reached out to Castanet to let us know that he has been in communication with the door knocker Wednesday evening, "she emailed me last night and stated that she would like to meet my wife and I for coffee somewhere to have a discussion, likely about her agenda."

Siddon also indicated that he followed up with RCMP about the incident, "after discussing this with the RCMP I was advised not to interact with her, and they were to pay her a visit last night to give her a warning that, should she be seen in public again without a mask, they will ticket her."

Siddon also says he had another look at the surveillance video, "I then reviewed the video from my door camera on which she can clearly be heard saying that COVID-19 is a hoax."

ORIGINAL 4:00 a.m.

A Kelowna man is sounding the alarm after he says a woman knocked on his front door in the Lower Mission and spoke face-to-face with his mother-in-law without wearing a mask.

Dave Siddon reached out to Castanet to share a photo of a woman he says was going door-to-door in his neighbourhood on Tuesday, knocking on doors and looking for signatures on an anti-abortion petition.

Siddon tells Castanet his mother-in-law is 75-years-old and when she answered the door and saw a woman not wearing a mask she asked "why?" Siddon says the response from the woman at the door was, "my health is fine, I don't need a mask."

Siddon says the woman spoke to his mother-in-law and convinced her to sign the petition and once she signed the woman left and moved on.

"I can't believe that in these times people are still going door-to-door let alone refusing to wear a mask," Siddon says. "It's ironic that (they) seem to have a disregard for life and rules with respect to COVID-19."

Siddon is not sure which organization the woman represents even though he has since identified the woman's name using other means.

"My mother-in-law likely had no idea what she was signing. I'd ask any organization that is going door-to-door in these (COVID-19) times to at least put a mask on."

A spokesperson for the Kelowna Right to Life Society has confirmed the woman's identity and that she is affiliated with their organization, however, "she has obviously taken to do this on her own accord. We are not conducting any sort of door-to-door petition drive."

Siddon indicated that his mother-in-law's health is not perfect and she may not even have been aware of what she was signing, "she's been shut-in for months and is likely a bit lonely but this is potentially dangerous to her health."

Right now British Columbians can receive a $230 fine for not wearing a mask in all indoor public spaces.
