Kelowna woman captures a piece of the wild kingdom in her backyard

Wild kingdom in backyard

A Kelowna woman got a front-row seat as the wild kingdom unfolded in her backyard.

Launa Markle, who lives in Rutland on Findlay Road, saw something she has never seen before; an eagle dropping into her backyard to make a meal out of a squirrel.

Markle says she's seen plenty of eagles, hawks, and owls before but she's never had one, "swoop into my yard to kill a squirrel."

Markle says it all happened very fast and one minute the black squirrel was running around her back yard, the next, the squirrel was dead and the eagle was enjoying dinner.

"I didn't see the squirrel move so I'm assuming he killed it when he grabbed it with his talons."

Markle grabbed her camera to take a few pictures, startling the hungry eagle. While it took off startled, it returned to its prey.

"He picked it clean, there was nothing left off it except a bit of fur."
