Okanagan family reaches out to say 'thank you' for help

Family so grateful for help

An Okanagan family is reaching out to say a big "thank you" to another local family who helped them in their time of need.

Bree Cawley says her family was heading out on a one-week vacation near Whatshan Lake, but on the way, the truck her husband was driving burst into flames.

"He got the kids out, but they were on a forest service road kinda in the middle of nowhere. The truck and trailer was going up in flames and these families showed up out of the blue on ATVs and got them out of there to safety."

Cawley says it's just sheer luck that they came along when they did, "they made sure the woods around the fire didn't catch and kept it from spreading and starting a wildfire."

There was no cell service, so if the group hadn't come along things could have been very different.

Cawley managed to get a couple of the names and reached out to Castanet to see if we could pass along how grateful she and her family are for the help.

"The group was from Kelowna, Bryan Flynn and his wife Shannon and Paul Dayman." There was another couple but she didn't get their names.

When Castanet asked what message she wanted to pass along Bree choked up, "that makes me a little bit emotional. These families were amazing, honestly I think they saved my family and the forest."

Friends of the Cawley's have started a GoFundMe to help out financially, "we don't know what insurance is going to do but they won't cover the contents of the RV and we were going for a week. We had everything from bikes to kayaks to personal items that date back years and have sentimental value."

To make matters worse, they've had two floods in their house over the last couple of months and her husband has been laid off due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Cawley says it's nice to know there are still good people in the world, "they just jumped in and helped out we are so grateful."
