Province to audit forest service roads in Vernon area

Back roads under scrutiny

The province is taking a look at forest service roads in the North Okanagan to make sure they're up to code.

The Forest Practices Board will audit roads in the Okanagan-Shuswap, Campbell River and Peace natural resource districts.

The board will begin site inspections, centred around Vernon, Campbell River and Dawson Creek, likely in late summer or early fall.

Auditors will examine whether the backroads meet requirements of the Forest and Range Practices Act.

Once the audit is complete, a report will be prepared, and any party that may be adversely affected by its findings will have a chance to respond.

The board's final report and recommendations will then be released to the public and government.

The Forest Practices Board is an independent watchdog for sound forest and range practices. It audits forest and range practices on public land, as well as appropriateness of government enforcement.
