Man in his 20's dies after falling off inflatable device in lake

Young man dies in lake

A man in his 20's died on Monday evening after going missing in a popular lake in Squamish.

Officers responded to a call at Browning Lake in Murrin Provincial Park at about 6:40 p.m., reports CTV News Vancouver.

Friends and witnesses told first responders that the man was on an inflatable device, but had slipped off and was nowhere to be seen.

After "a frantic search in the water," police say the man was found, was given lifesaving measures by BC Ambulance and Squamish Fire Services and taken to hospital, but did not survive.

"Water safety has always been a concern in the Sea to Sky and the ocean, lakes and rivers in the Squamish area are no exception," said Sgt. Sascha Banks.

"Our thoughts are with the young man's family and friends. I unfortunately have had to provide this Adventuring Safely message in the Sea to Sky far too many times, I can only ask that you please, please be safe in our communities."

The man's family has been notified and his name will not be released.

The incident is being investigated by the BC Coroners Service to determine exactly what took place and for the purpose of assisting with future safety messaging.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Squamish RCMP at 604-892-6100.
