Firefighters battling multiple wildfires in Merritt Fire Zone

Wildfire sparks next to Coq

UPDATE: 8:15 P.M.

The Kamloops Fire Centre says a wildfire 27 kilometres southwest of Merritt is now under control.

Fire information officer Gagan Lidhran says the fire, originally estimated at seven hectares, has been downgraded to just 3.8 hectares in size.

"We will not have crews overnight on this fire, but the smoke may be visible, so we just want people to know the BC Wildfire Service is aware of that," says Lidhran.

"Crews have established a guard around the fire, so that is the reason why no crews are manning it overnight."

ORIGINAL STORY: Noon

The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) is actioning a number of wildfires in the Kamloops Fire Centre, including one next to the Coquihalla Highway.

The Coldwater River wildfire, 27 kilometres southwest of Merritt, is estimated at seven hectares in size. Ten BCWS members are on site, trying to establish control lines. No structures are threatened at this point.

Crews are also dealing with the Dry Lake wildfire north of Princeton above Highway 5A. It has been mapped at 22 hectares, fire information officer Gagan Lidhran tells Castanet.

"We currently have 29 personnel that are receiving support from aerial resources," she says, noting 11 pieces of heavy equipment are also part of the firefighting effort.

The fire is listed as "out of control."

Lidhran says no structures are threatened at this time.

BC Wildfire Service's online mapping tool says the blaze is suspected to be lightning-caused.
