West Kelowna RCMP and BC Coroners Service investigate fatal drowning incident

'Tragic death' on the water

West Kelowna RCMP have now confirmed that a 65-year-old man drowned Thursday afternoon.

RCMP and the BC Coroners Service say they are continuing to investigate the tragic death of the Central Okanagan man.

Emergency crews responded to the report of an unresponsive person in the water just before 1:45 p.m., near the 2000 block of Boucherie Rd. Police tell Castanet that a 65-year-old man was swimming in the waters of Okanagan Lake and failed to re-surface.

Witnesses on scene located and pulled the man from the water within minutes and immediately began CPR. Emergency services arrived and continued life-saving efforts, however the man could not be resuscitated.

“Despite the best efforts of everyone involved and the heroic efforts of witnesses, the man passed away,” states Cst. Solana Paré. “RCMP Victim Services are providing support to the witnesses, friends and family of the victim. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and family of the victim during this difficult time.”

The BC Coroners Service is also investigating the man’s sudden death. Due to the privacy of the deceased, neither organization will be releasing or confirming identity.
