Man gets tasered, then allegedly throws a hammer at Coquitlam RCMP

Man throws hammer at cops

A man in Coquitlam has been arrested after he allegedly threw a hammer at a police officer.

Coquitlam RCMP arrived at the suspect's residence shortly after midnight on Wednesday when they received reports from neighbours that a badly damaged car had driven into a yard and hit multiple parked vehicles.

When police announced themselves the man came out of his house holding a number of blunt objects, including a 40cm hammer. According to the RCMP the man immediately challenged the police and the cops tasered the man, but it was only partially effective.

The man then allegedly threw the hammer and hit a police officer. The officer has been treated with minor injuries and will make a full recovery, and police say the suspect was not seriously injured.

The Coquitlam RCMP is currently searching for citizens who may have taken video of the incident.

"It's perfectly fine to record video of a police arrest from a safe distance, but Coquitlam RCMP is asking that witnesses to an intense early-morning arrest share their video with police so that it can be part of a complete and impartial investigation," says Corporal Michael McLaughlin.

The cops interviewed witnesses in the area, but they have yet to locate two people who drove by that may have taken a video.

"When you take video you’re still the ‘owner’ and you can do what you wish with the copies, but it’s important that we get the original, unaltered video," says McLaughlin. "Collecting the best evidence is always our priority, but it’s extra-important right now because police are being questioned more than ever about our use of force."

If you have information regarding this event, Coquitlam RCMP are asking you to call them at 604-945-1550 and reference file number 2020-17740.
