Lower Mainland man facing charges for feeding bear

Charged for feeding bears

A West Vancouver man is learning the hard way it is not smart to feed a wild bear.

The unidentified man has been charged with one count of feeding dangerous wildlife and one count of attracting dangerous wildlife under the BC Wildlife Act.

According to the BC Conservation Officer Service, the charges stem from an investigation that was initiated after a video surfaced of man feeding bears from his home in 2018.

The man is expected to appear July 29 at North Vancouver Provincial Court.

"The biggest concern for the BCCOS with respect to feeding dangerous wildlife is the serious risk to public safety, as well as the safety of the bear. By feeding a bear, or any wild animal, you are food-conditioning the animal and putting it in harm’s way. It also puts the individuals involved in the activity at risk of being hurt, or worse,” said a post on the BCCOS Facebook page.
