Heavy boat concentration leads to six-hour docking wait at Kekuli Bay

6 hour wait to dock a boat

Many boaters took advantage of the beautiful weather on Sunday to spend a sunny day on Kalamalka Lake, which created quite the backup at the Kekuli Bay boat launch.

Confusion and congestion was in the air as a long line of trailers and concentration of boats waiting to dock led to a six-hour wait on the water.

"We waited from 3 p.m. to dock and we didn't get out of there until about 9 p.m.," Tanya Alves tells Castanet. "The parking lot was full, trailers were backed up to the playground and about 30 boats were attempting to dock from 3 o'clock on."

Alves says the confusion stemmed from the order of procedure on who gets the right of way to dock their boat. Some users were docking their boat and then heading up the road to get their trailer, and others would be near the back of the line in the water but have someone pull the trailer up early to the shore and wait for them.

This caused the long wait time as people were jostling for position to get their boats on their trailers.

"People still seemed to be in fairly good spirits considering the situation, but we did see some boats running into each other," says Alves. "There were also some parking their boat sideways at the dock, it was a bit hectic."

The line didn't subdue until later that night, as there were still boaters coming to launch in the afternoon and evening.
