Bear cub sighted in Mission Creek Regional Park area

Bear cub at Mission Creek

UPDATED: 4:20 p.m.

Another local resident hiking Mission Creek Regional Park on Sunday says she was heading for Gallaghers Canyon when she encountered a very aggressive coyote.

After she got past the coyote, she continued down the trail, over the boardwalk and through the marsh, where she encountered a fully grown brown bear.

Hikers need to be extra aware of wildlife in these areas right now, she says.

A Kelowna resident is warning other hikers about a bear sighting behind the Mission Creek Regional Park on Sunday.

The resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, says he was walking the trails with his step-son toward the turtle pond when he encountered the cub.

"Five minutes into my adventure I came across a bear cub. I had my phone out because I had just missed taking a picture of a hummingbird and didn't want to miss another shot like that," he tells Castanet.

The sighting took place on Sunday around 11:30 a.m.

He says once he saw the bear, he grabbed his boy's hand and quietly left the area. On the way back he alerted other hikers about the bear.

When asked if he's ever seen a bear before, he says, "not so close before."

He also says that there was no mama bear or other cubs around, which was worrisome for the father, but he did see a deer right after.
