Kelowna's newest brewery opened its doors this past week

Another brewery pops up

Kelowna's newest brewery opened up its tap room earlier this week, but that's just the beginning for the new startup.

Welton Brewery has taken over the old Boundary Brewing space on Neave Court near UBC Okanagan, after Boundary called it quits this past spring.

The founder of Welton Brewery, Simon Welton, is looking to bring a taste of his birthplace to the Okanagan.

“I realized there was a gap in the market, not just in Kelowna, but also in B.C. as a whole, which is British beer,” said Welton, who originally hails from England.

“It's a lot down to small but very vital differences in process, ingredients, even temperatures make a huge difference, water profile. So that's something that we're trying to emulate here, is everything that would make it taste like it just comes straight out of the U.K.”

While Welton does not have their own beer ready to sell just yet, they've opened up their tap room this week, selling pints of Boundary Brewing's beer that was brewed earlier this year. Welton plans to have their own beer on tap by Aug. 1 at the latest.

But with the Neave court location a bit of a ways from the downtown core, Welton will also be bringing his British-style beer to the burgeoning Brewer's Row in Kelowna's North End. He's hoping to open his English pub and restaurant on the corner of Clement Avenue and Ethel Street in November.

“We're going to have fish and chips, we're going to have English cheese boards, we're going to have aesthetics that hopefully if you've ever been to England, will really give you a little sense of nostalgia in walking in there and you'll feel like you're in a little piece of Britain, but in the lovely Kelowna at the same time,” Welton said.

The new pub will be joining other more established breweries in the area like Vice and Virtue, Red Bird, Kettle River, Rustic Reel and Jackknife.

“People can come down to our location and actually visit, I think by the time we're there, we're talking six, seven breweries within walking distance, and that's going to make a really good night out,” Welton said.
