Lake Country council asked to support lakeshore land purchase

Support for park purchase

The District of Lake Country may become the latest jurisdiction to get behind a push to turn 234-acres of property along Okanagan Lake into a provincial park.

Coun. Blair Ireland, who represents the constituents of Okanagan Centre has entered a notice of motion, asking the municipality join the City of Vernon in pushing the province to purchase the land.

The motion, which will be introduced at next Tuesday's council meeting, states,"THAT the District of Lake Country write a letter to the Province of BC supporting the City of Vernon's request for the provincial purchase of 234 acres on Okanagan Lake near Ellison Park currently for sale, as this purchase is one of the last opportunities to have a large public space on Okanagan Lake."

As was reported last month, the Chelsea Estate property situated between Ellison Provincial Park and Predator Ridge was recently put up for sale.

While no price tag has been listed, the property was last assessed at $16.5 million.

The City of Vernon and the Vernon Chamber of Commerce have both written to the province, encouraging BC Parks to buy the lakefront property.

An online petition supporting the purchase has received nearly 10,700 signatures.
