Classic movies on the big screen at local theatres starting Friday

Old-school movies in theatre

For those who may be too young to have caught classics like Ghostbusters, Grease or Jaws in theatres back when they were released, you're in luck.

After closing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a number of Okanagan movie theatres are reopening on Friday. But the virus has put the brakes on the production and release of almost all new movies, so Landmark Cinemas are looking to the past to fill their screens.

Kelowna's Grand 10 will be showing older classics like Dirty Dancing, Goonies, Raider of the Lost Ark, Grease, Back to the Future, Jurassic Park and Jaws, along with some more modern films, like the Matrix, Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone and Lord of the Rings: Fellowship Of Ring.

West Kelowna's Xtreme will also be showing E.T., along with the entire Dark Knight trilogy, while movie goers in Penticton can see many of these films, in addition to Footloose.

And to help get people back to the theatre, Landmark Cinemas is charging just $5 for each showing, or $2.99 on Tuesdays. The deal runs until July 23.

The theatres will have reduced capacity and seating will be spaced out to abide by physical distancing guidelines.
