Thanks for the support, but please don't bring food to hospitals

Don't bring food to hospital

Please don't bring food to the hospital.

A woman who says she tried to bring food to Vernon Jubilee Hospital was turned away.

"Management is turning away people who want to provide food and gifts to staff working in the ER. Some of these nurses and doctors are not even getting meal breaks and are working 12-plus with little to no breaks," she said.

Interior Health, meanwhile, said in a Twitter post that it is "overwhelmed by the generosity of our communities, offers of homemade surgical masks, cookies or other foods. However, due to our strict safety standards and to minimize risk to our health-care staff, we're unable to accept those offers."

"We have seen your signs, and we’ve heard your cheers every night at 7 p.m. Thank you for all you’ve done to support us," IH says in a statement on its website. "Mostly, we’d like to thank you for staying home. It might sound like a small thing, but every time you choose to stay home and limit your contact with others, you’re helping to keep us safe."

IH says to ensure that any non-cash donations, personal protective equipment, medical supplies, and any other donations meet safety and infection control standards and are appropriate for our care environment, any public offers should be directed to the following links:

Meanwhile, another Vernon woman says she was turned away from a Tim Hortons drive-thru when she walked up to the window to purchase gift cards to give to the Upper Room Mission after learning it had cut back meal distribution to twice a week.

"My husband and I wanted to see if there was a way we could supplement meals for the homeless," said Nora Donovan-Ward. "I wanted 40 gift cards to distribute to anyone that was out there waiting for lunch."

However, she was told that walk-up traffic is not allowed due to liability concerns.
