Coronavirus complications cancel Lumby Days festival

COVID cancels Lumby Days

Another major event has fallen to the coronavirus.

The 65th annual Lumby Days has officially been cancelled.

Chairperson Merna Alexander posted on Facebook the event that has been going since 1955 has been cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.

Lumby Days was scheduled to take place June 12-14.

“We waited until the last possible moment to cancel,” said Alexander. “We were celebrating our 65th, and here we are – first time it has ever had to be cancelled.”

Alexander said organizers were not able to secure insurance for the parade, vendors and other events.

Due to social distancing protocols, organizing boards and schools – which she said are the “major force” of Lumby Days – are not able to meet, making it near impossible to organize the event.

“They are all respectfully staying home and staying safe,” Alexander said.

Fundraising, or a lack thereof, was also a consideration to cancel the event.

“That's the major drive behind Lumby Days, because we don't charge any admission,” said Alexander. “It's all under donations by all those clubs and organizations and businesses. And, with them being laid off, it's just not reasonable to expect them to help us.”

Alexander said Lumby Days will be back in 2021.
