Kamloops churches take Easter service online

Easter services go online

Many churches around the world — including those in Kamloops — have moved online and will be providing Easter service on a digital platform.

Chris Throness, lead pastor at Kamloops Alliance Church, tells Castanet that staff were already streaming their service when the pandemic hit. They were averaging less than 100 online worshippers a weekend; since the COVID-19 pandemic started, that number can be anywhere between 1,200 and 1,500 people.

"We've actually grown since moving online, so it's kind of a cool insight into our digital age," Throness says, adding around 1,000 people were coming to the church pre-pandemic.

"I think what (the pandemic) is doing is really showing the resiliency of church, that we can actually move to a more online format and people can still engage," he adds. "It's not as ideal but we are definitely exploring ways we can make that online experience more connected: having online pastors, having online connection, chat rooms and even a virtual foyer where people can meet."

He notes staff have the ability to track all the IP addresses and their location.

"People are tuning in from all over," he says. "We're excited to reach more people this Easter than we have in a long time."

Kamloops Alliance Church will hold an online service on Good Friday (April 10), at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.; on Saturday, April 11, at 6:30 p.m.; and on Easter Sunday, at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Each service is around 45 minutes long and includes music, sermon and prayer.
