Vernon Pride Prom watches virus as event set for June 27

Pride Prom in the works

Organizers are hoping to move ahead with the Vernon Pride Prom, despite the coronavirus pandemic.

Taron Des Mazes says they are watching the virus situation and hope not to have to cancel.

The event, which debuted last year, is scheduled for June 27 at Record City in downtown Vernon, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Des Mazes, a Grade 12 student at Vernon Secondary School, organized the first Pride Prom last year for LGBTQ+ youth, and hopes the event will grow from there.

"I am putting on this LGBTQ+ dance as an event to build a stronger community for LGBTQ+ youth in Vernon and surrounding areas," she says.

"As it stands, youth have to travel as far as Penticton to participate in pride events, to celebrate who they are."

The group is actively seeking sponsors to cover the costs of the venue, decorations, and food, as well as any prizes for participants.

Tickets are $5 in advance or $10 at the door.
