Referral-only drive-by virus testing centre in downtown Vernon

Testing site opens in Vernon

Interior Health has opened a COVID-19 testing site in downtown Vernon.

The testing site is operating out of IH's Urgent & Primary Care Centre on 32nd Avenue.

However, the site is only for people who have been referred after calling 811 or by their family doctor. It is not drop-in, and it is by appointment only, says IH spokesperson Susan Duncan.

At their pre-booked appointment time, patients drive up and are then tested in their car, without having to get out or come into the clinic. This measure better protects other patients and our health-care workers, says the health authority.

Testing guidelines from the BC Centre for Disease Control limit testing to people with symptoms who are:

  • Hospitalized or are likely to be hospitalized
  • Health-care workers
  • Residents of long-term care facilities
  • Part of an investigation of a cluster or outbreak

Those without symptoms or with mild symptoms, who can be managed at home, are not being tested.

The exception is health-care workers with COVID-19 infection who have recovered and require a negative test prior to returning to work.

Check the province's self-assessment tool for help determining if you might need testing.

IH says every case confirmed by testing is investigated by public health officials who conduct contact tracing and reach out to individuals who may have been exposed.
