Fire on deck extinguished

UPDATE: 7:55 p.m.

Vernon fire crews rushed to a downtown building fire Thursday morning at about 10 a.m.

The fire, at Distinctive Decor Antiques on 30 Avenue, had started on a rooftop deck that was not easily accessible. Once firefighters got access to the blaze, it was extinguished quickly.

“Today was an example of the dedicated work and expertise of our local firefighters,” said Deputy Chief Scott Hemstad. “Because of their actions, damage to the building was minimized and the fire was kept from extending to other buildings in the Downtown core.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

UPDATE: 12:07 p.m.

City officials have confirmed the fire began on the exterior of the building next door to the antique shop, and is classified as a structure fire.

There was no significant damage reported to the building at this time.

Crews have now left the scene, and the City of Vernon will provide more details shortly.
