Price of gas in Kelowna remains high despite record-low oil prices

Gas price plummets, not here

It's rare, almost unheard of to see gasoline prices in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland lower than they are in the Okanagan.

These are rare times.

As the demand for gas drops along with the worldwide price for oil, prices at the pumps have fallen to levels not seen in several years.

Oil and gas supply is far outpacing demand as countries hunker down in the wake of the spreading COVID-19 epidemic.

The cheapest gas in the province according to gasbuddy.com can be found in Prince George, where a litre of regular fuel goes for as little as 81.9 cents. The average price in that region is 90.5 cents a litre.

In the Okanagan, the price for a litre of regular varies from an average of 107.5 in the North Okanagan, to 109.9 in the Central Okanagan and 112.0 in the South Okanagan-Similkameen.

The average in the Lower Mainland is 111.0, but fuel is being sold for as little as 101.9 at some stations.

The lowest price in Kelowna remains 109.9, despite cheap purchasing prices.

According to Petro Canada rack pricing gas is being sold to local stations for 48.2 cents a litre. Factor in approximately 40 cents for taxes, and the wholesale price being paid is a little under 90 cents a litre.

The lowest prices in the country are in the Edmonton area, where the average is 73.9 cents.
