Blasting clears path for salmon on Fraser River

Blast clears salmon's path

Work continues on the Big Bar landslide on the Fraser River, with blasting taking place last week in an effort to clear a path for salmon.

The slide, north of Lillooet, B.C., was discovered in June 2019 with estimates showing 75,000 cubic metres of material deposited in the river. It devastated last fall’s already weak salmon return.

Peter Kiewit & Sons successfully carried out a planned blast at the “East Toe” of the slide on Feb. 18.

“The result is a widened channel and more flow directed toward the east river bank,” the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans said.

“Acoustic monitoring downstream of the slide did not detect any fish in the area before the blast and no fish mortality was detected.”

Preparations are now underway for a second blast in the middle of March.
