Proud for Prom donations help students attend their grads

Drive-thru prom shop

Every year, graduation comes around, and every year, it can create financial stress for students whose families can’t afford the expense of glitz and glam.

That’s the reason for the second annual Proud for Prom drive-thru donation day on Friday – so that you can help students attend their school prom in style.

Organizer Julie Lovebridge-Marks says they are looking for gently used gowns, suits, ties, jewelry, purses – "anything that a young person would like to wear to prom."

The event started in Kelowna in 2019, and Loveridge-Marks says the most rewarding part is seeing the reaction from students.

"Seeing the kids dressed up and able to participate was amazing. We received a lot of emails after the fact saying thank you and showing their gratitude, that they just wouldn't be able to go unless we had provided them with all of these services, and of course we couldn't do it without the help from the community."

A significant number of community sponsors helped to make this event happen, she says, including the Coast Capri Hotel, Falcon Self-Storage, and Kenali Hair Salon.

After Friday's drive-thru event, students will gather at the Coast Capri Hotel on April 5 to "shop" for their outfits.

"They go shopping, so we set the ballroom up at the Capri like a store," says Loveridge-Marks. "They're paired with a personal shopper, and they move through the different stations."

Students choose their gown or suit, then move through to shoes, jewelry, accessories, purses, makeup, hair and photography. They're gifted corsages and boutonnieres, and gift cards for hair services on the day of their school prom event.

The drive-thru donation event runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at George Elliot Senior Secondary, Rutland Senior Secondary, Kelowna Senior Secondary and Mount Boucherie Senior Secondary.

If you know a graduating student who would like to be referred for the program, there are some places still available. Refer a student on the Proud for Prom website
