Shorter hours, increased fees start soon at Vernon Aquatic Centre

Shorter pool hours start soon

Due to recent changes in the National Safety Standards, the number of lifeguards on duty increased when there are more than 80 people in the Vernon Aquatic Centre. Because of this, the aquatic centre was forced to reduce their hours and increase their fees.

Starting on March 2, the pool will be closing half an hour earlier from Monday to Thursday, and one hour earlier on Friday for the rest of the year. In July and August, weekend afternoon swims will be cut, which includes Toonie Swim.

Fees will be raised 4 per cent to make up the rest of additional costs needed for the staff change. The new fees will be put in place on April 1.

“While this is extremely unfortunate, individuals identified as being financially disadvantaged through our Affordable Access Pass program can still receive a 75% discount when attending the normal public swim times,” says Doug Ross, Director of Recreation Services.

The City of Vernon is responsible for operational decisions, while the District of Coldstream and Areas B & C make annual contributions as per their agreement with the City.
