Crime spree lands man in jail

A 33-year-old man is in custody after a two-day crime spree across Kelowna and West Kelowna.

Shawn Bell is being charged with breaking and entering, theft of a motor vehicle, obstruct a peace officer, mischief, possession of stolen property under $5,000, disguise with intent, and possession of break and enter tools.

Just after 10 p.m. on Feb. 19, 2020, Bell broke into a studio behind a residential house on Pandosy Street in Kelowna.

Several paintings and personal items were stolen, the victim told police, and Bell was seen fleeing the area in a stolen grey Tahoe.

On Feb. 20 at about 1:30 a.m., Kelowna RCMP were notified that someone was breaking into vehicles on Chapman Place.

"Frontline officers flooded the area but the suspect fled in the same stolen Tahoe," reads an RCMP press release.

Just after 6 a.m. the same day, West Kelowna RCMP responded to a break and enter at a residential house on Lynden Road, where several items were stolen, including a laptop, jewelry, personal items and a Ford F150.

At 9:30 a.m., a resident of Broadway Ave in Kelowna returned home to find two people in her backyard.

The resident told police they had broken into her shed, stolen three bikes and some tools, and fled in a blue Ford F150.

Just after 3 p.m., an alert security guard at Orchard Park Mall observed Bell parked in a blue F150 in the parking lot, acting in a manner he described as suspicious.

Officers and members of the Kelowna RCMP Target Team immediately attended the location and arrested Bell.

"Property and evidence gathered both at the scene of the arrest, and the scenes of the crimes, tied the arrested man to these offences," reads the release.
