10km/hr speed signs erected at Kelowna's 3 parkades

Speed demons in parkades

Of all the problems you could find in a parkade, who would have thought speed was at, or near the top of the list.

That's just what is happening at two of Kelowna's three parkades, prompting the city to erect maximum 10 km/hr speed limit signs.

Parking manager Dave Duncan says the signs went up in response to complaints generated mainly from the Library and Memorial parkades.

"We have had complaints of near misses when people are backing out and cars come whipping by them," said Duncan.

"It's less at Chapman because Chapman has those tight corners. The others are two lanes, and you can keep a fairly consistent speed all the way up."

Duncan says the request was for speed bumps to help slow down traffic, but that wasn't feasible because of clearance issues.

The hope, he says, is the signs will act as a deterrent and people will slow down.

The two parkades are also havens for skateboarders who go to the top floor and, because of the steep slopes, are able to ride all the way to the bottom.

Duncan says there have been some near misses as boarders come around a corner, only to face a vehicle coming at them head-on at 40 km/hr.
