Virus patient may have had contact with Fraser Valley schools

Virus in BC schools?

The sixth confirmed coronavirus patient in B.C. may have come into contact with people at schools in the Fraser Health region, according to authorities.

A letter dated Feb. 21 was shared with schools in the area, saying those contacts were now in isolation, remaining in good health. The letter also says these individuals were not showing symptoms while in school, CTV News reports.

The letter stated there is no public health risk within the schools or the community however, the letter did not state which school or city was connected to this specifically.

The health region spans from Burnaby to Hope, including hundreds of schools. With school districts in Chilliwack, Maple Ridge, Abbotsford and Coquitlam.

For one Abbotsford mother who received the letter on Monday, the lack of full information poses many concerns.

"They won't say which school it is, or even which city it's in, and so now parents like me are thinking, you know, should I be extra worried?" said Jeannette Bollinger. "It's so vague."

Bollinger expresses concern for her 14-year-old son with down syndrome, as he is at a higher risk of getting sick due to respiratory issues.

"Knowing that this is out there and that it could come to his school, and that we wouldn't even know, is really scary," said Bollinger. "Having special needs too, it's hard to explain to him you know, you really need to be careful washing your hands and stuff like that, because he doesn't get it."
