Local mogul skier dies at 19

Local Penticton freestyle mogul skier Brayden Kuroda has died at age 19.

Brayden honed his skills through the Apex Mountain Freestyle Club under the watchful eye of his father and coach Kenni Kuroda, and had his sights set on the Olympics.

He had many medals and achievements under his belt, competing with the BC provincial team last year and the Canadian national mogul team for the first time this year.

“Our hearts are crushed with the immeasurable loss of this effervescent, bright, talented young man," said Peter Judge, Freestyle Canada’s chief executive officer in a press release Tuesday.

A cause of death was not provided.

Brayden had a vision of becoming a surgeon after realizing his Olympic dreams.

Condolences from Apex Mountain began pouring in Tuesday afternoon.

"Our deepest condolences to Berva and Kenni Kuroda and all of their friends and family as well as everyone in our freestyle community who were touched by Brayden Kuroda. He will be sorely missed," wrote Apex general manager James Shalman on Facebook, with many other expressing similar sentiments.

Freestyle Canada concluded "community was so important to Brayden and conversely his passing will leave an unfillable hole in the heart of our community."
