B.C. teacher handed 15 year ban for inappropriate behaviour

Banned for sex with student

A B.C. secondary school teacher has been banned from teaching for 15 years after having sex with and providing alcohol to a recent graduate.

The disciplinary notice from the B.C. Teacher Regulation Branch (TRB) revealed the teacher had been granted his teaching certification in September 2016.

The teacher engaged regularly in inappropriate physical contact with students during 2016 and 2017, such as touching their hands, shoulders, elbows, backs, knees and legs, revealed the notice.

In August 2017, the teacher "gave alcohol to... and engaged in sexual activity" with a student who had graduated two months earlier in June 2017.

The student had been in the teacher's Grade 12 class.

When interviewed by the school district about the situation, the teacher was "initially dishonest" in his responses, says the notice.

He was fired by his school district on Jan. 31, 2019, and the matter was handed over to the Commissioner.

In 2020, a formal consent resolution agreement was entered into, as the teacher agreed his actions constituted "professional misconduct" and were contrary to professional standards of teaching in B.C.

He agreed to not apply for re-certification for 15 years.

The name of the teacher, the school district he worked for and the name of the student have not been released to protect the student's identity.
