Osoyoos Indian Band planning a casino

OIB looks to build casino

The Osoyoos Indian Band is seeking support from the Town of Osoyoos to apply for a license to operate a casino.

The band is proposing a "community gaming centre" be built on band land across the street from the Petro Canada gas station on Highway 3 in Osoyoos, between 6,000 and 7,500 square feet in size.

It would include "100-150 electronic slot machines, 100 electric bingo machines, a 50 square foot off-track betting area and a 50-60 seat pub/bistro," according to Mike Campol of Nation First Investment Group, on behalf of the OIB.

"The facility will be designed to reflect the cultural history of the Osoyoos Indian Band and the unique environmental history of the northern point of the Sonora Desert," Campol added.

The centre would be on band lands and therefore revenues would be paid to the band, not the town.

Osoyoos mayor Sue McKortoff and chief administrative officer Allan Chabot met with OIB chief Clarence Louie and Campol on Feb. 7, at which time the OIB requested the town's support in their application to the Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch.

The matter will be discussed by council at Tuesday's meeting.
