Penticton sees major drop in January building permits issued

Building permits sharp drop

Penticton has seen a dramatic difference in the value of building permits issued this January when compared to 2019.

Recent data shows the city issued permits for work valued at  $2.12 million in January 2020 — more than $6 million less than January 2019, which saw work worth $8.67 million receive a go-ahead.

The city tracks residential units created out of building permits issued, and that has fallen year-over-year as well.

In January 2019, 13 residential units resulted from new permits, including three carriage houses, compared to four new units in January 2020 which come from two secondary suites and two residential single family dwellings.

Total permits issued were 41 for January 2020 and 52 for January 2019.

The majority of this past month's total value came from $1.4 million on seven single-family dwellings, two of which created secondary suites.

2019 overall was a record year for building permits issued by the city, one of the busiest ever for builders and the trades.
