Conservation officers rescue elk trapped in collapsed haystack

Elk rescued from haystack

The B.C. Conservations Officer Service had an unusual rescue in northern B.C. this week.

The agency rescued a pair of elk which were trapped underneath a collapsed haystack at a farm in Smithers.

“The unsuspecting farmer noticed something sticking out of his lopsided haystack and called the RAPP line,” the BCCOS said.

“Conservation officers arrived to find an almost completely covered elk. As they helped direct the farmer with his tractor to remove the hay, to their surprise a second elk was discovered completely buried,” the BCCOS continued.

It’s unknown how long the elk had been trapped, but they were freed and walked away. It is suspected the animals were eating the side of the haystack when it tipped over onto them.
