ICBC launches new 'Fairness Office' to improve accountability

ICBC more accountable

More changes are coming to ICBC.

David Eby, B.C.'s attorney general says the province wants to bring in new measures to improve accountability and transparency.

One of the main changes will be the creation of a new "Fairness Office." Eby says the office will be responsible for dealing with customer complaints and all decisions wil be posted online.

CTV News Vancouver is reporting the move won't eliminate the need for individuals to use B.C.' small claims court to settle ICBC payout decisions, however the Fairness Office will handle complaints by people who feel they have been "treated unfairly by some ICBC policy, or an adjustor," says Eby.

"Today we're taking on the linked issues of transparency, trust and accountability at ICBC and the important need for improvements," Eby told reporters Wednesday.

"I don't think it's a secret that many British Columbians just don't trust ICBC, and that's a problem. Because British Columbians deserve the peace of mind of knowing that if they're injured in a crash and they ask their public insurance provider for help … they will be well taken care of."
