Night skiing cancelled after Big White power outage

Power restored at Big White

UPDATE: 5 p.m.

Snow appears to be the culprit behind Big White's power outage Tuesday afternoon.

Power was knocked out to most of the resort and surrounding homes just before 1 p.m., after snow fell off some power lines, causing two lines to touch and resulting in a short circuit.

"Snow has unloaded off some power lines, causing them to collide just before 1 p.m.," said FortisBC's Jas Baweja.

FortisBC crews were able to restore power to the resort by 4:20 p.m., but the outage forced the cancellation of night skiing.

More than 550 centimetres of snow has fallen at the resort this winter.

UPDATE: 4:20 p.m.

Power has been restored at Big White after an outage knocked out power across the resort.

The outage began at about 1 p.m., turning the lights off at more than 1,000 homes on the hill, along with buildings in the village, Happy Valley and Black Forest. Several chairlifts were also put out of commission.

While power has now been restored, Big White cancelled their night skiing as a result of the outage.

FortisBC has not yet disclosed the cause of the outage.

ORIGINAL: 2:30 p.m.

Several chairlifts, the entire village, and more than 1,000 homes are without power at Big White Tuesday afternoon, but it's unclear why.

The widespread outage occurred at about 1 p.m., impacting the Happy Valley area, Lara's Gondola, Plaza Chair, and the Black Forest forest area, along with the entire village and 1,086 homes.

“We are experiencing a power outage across the mountain,” Big White posted to Facebook. “The cause is still unknown but FortisBC is aware and they have dispatched technicians to get power back on as quickly as possible.”

FortisBC estimates the power will be restored by 4 p.m.
