West Kelowna looks for $150K to complete flood mitigation plan

Seeking flood plan funds

The City of West Kelowna hopes to get help from the province to complete its flood mitigation plan.

To that end, city council will be asked to support an application for maximum funding of $150,000 through the Community Emergency Preparedness Fund.

In a report for council, staff say a comprehensive plan will help the city to identify short, medium and long-range actions it can take to protect lives, property and infrastructure.

"The plan will also better position the city to apply for federal and provincial assistance to conduct infrastructure flood mitigation work," the report goes on to say.

"Damaging freshet and flooding, which local governments could once expect to occur every 100 years are now recurring within the space of one to five years."

In order to qualify for funding, the local government is required to have plans in place which include professional assessments, and recommendations for shovel-ready projects.

The city was not successful in obtaining similar funds in 2019.
