UNBC prof calls for non-confidence vote on university president

Confidence vote at UNBC

University of Northern B.C. professor Peter Jackson is challenging the leadership of president Daniel Weeks.

On Wednesday, Jackson presented a notice of motion to UNBC's senate calling for a non-confidence vote in Weeks. Jackson is a senate member, representing the university's college of science and management.

Jackson is a professor of environmental science and a mesoscale meteorologist, whose prominent work has focused on air quality in Prince George.

In an emailed statement, a spokesperson for UNBC said the university will not speak to the issue until it goes before the next senate meeting.

"The notice of motion was presented at yesterday afternoon's senate meeting," the statement said. "That notice will not go to the senate steering committee to consider for inclusion on the next formal senate meeting, which is scheduled for Feb. 26. The agenda for the Feb. 26 senate meeting is expected to be published the Friday before."

UNBC's senate is the academic administrative body, while the board of governors is responsible for the management, administration and control of the university's property, revenue, business and affairs.

Jackson's motion comes after a three-week strike by UNBC faculty in November. The faculty association and UNBC administration agreed to take the labour dispute to arbitration.
