Rescue centre seeks owner of rare hawk found hurt in Kelowna

Hurt hawk's owner sought

Are you missing a hawk?

The SORCO raptor rehab centre was called to rescue an injured Harris hawk today in Kelowna's Lower Mission.

“We know it is from the Mission area in Kelowna,” said manager Dale Belvedere, explaining they are aware of a falconer in the neighbourhood that has a pair of the rare birds.

The bird’s band does not have a name or phone number on it, but is numbered ML15317, she said.

“It went down to kill a duck this morning and it wasn’t successful, and I think the ducks injured it.”

Belvedere believes the hawk, which is native to Mexico, belongs to a falconer that lets the birds fly the neighbourhood for the day prior to calling them back at night. The owner likely won’t even know the bird is hurt until it doesn’t return this evening.

The owner of the hawk is asked to contact SORCO at 250-498-4251.
