Kamloops RCMP warn about telemarketing hacking scam

Beware of hacking scam

The telemarketing scams seem to be stepping their game up. Kamloops RCMP have recently received a report of a telemarketing scam where the caller claimed that the victim's computer had a virus.

The scammer said they were with a computer company, and that they detected a virus or spyware on her computer. They then asked the victim to give them remote access to her computer so they could get rid of the virus. The victim obliged, which led to the scammer gaining access to her banking and credit card information.

The Kamloops RCMP has offered some tips to be vigilant when it comes to telemarketing fraudsters.

"If you receive a phone call from someone about your computer system's security status, hang up," said Cpl. Jodie Shelkie in a press release. "Never give a stranger remote access to your computer, and do not give out any of your personal or financial information over the phone, unless you know for sure the person on the other end of the phone can be trusted."

If you are the recipient of a phone call that you believe might be a scam, report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
