Central hosts burger fundraiser to help young girl with cancer

Businesses rally to help Elara

UPDATED: 12:30 p.m.

Central Kitchen & Bar co-owner Jared Lee says he has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support they have received for the Isagawa family.

The eatery has been inundated with offers of prizes from local businesses for Saturday night's silent auction.

"We did a call out to friends who own local businesses and they’ve come out in droves to support this little girl … it’s incredible. We’re really stoked to be part of the community and to see this outpouring of support."

Auction prizes include two all-inclusive annual World Gym memberships valued at $800 each, Mosaic Books gift cards, a Burke Hair Lounge gift card, and a children's Power Wheels Jeep valued at over $400 from Okanagan Chrysler Jeep Dodge.

Cash donations which will go directly to the family are also being accepted, says Lee.

"This is a really really unfortunate situation. I can't even begin to imagine what the family is going through, so anything that we can do as a community I think is important to step up and really show the family some support."

Kelowna eatery Central Kitchen & Bar will be going the extra mile this Saturday to help two of its regulars and their 21-month-old daughter.

The pub is hosting a 'Burgers for Elara' fundraiser to raise money for Elara Isagawa and her parents, whose worst nightmare came to life on Christmas Eve when she was diagnosed with a massive tumour.

It required emergency treatment at B.C. Children's Hospital, and the young girl started chemotherapy after further tests showed the tumour was malignant.

Now, the Central family is rallying together to do what they can to help the Isagawas, who have a special connection to the pub.

"OK Kelowna, it’s time to show up and show out for the most precious little girl who is currently in the fight of her young life," Central wrote in a Facebook post.

"Nico and Jessica Isagawa are two amazing regulars with a special connection to us here at Central. Nico and Jessica had their first date here, which then led to their engagement ... which then led to the birth of their precious Elara.

"Elara is only two years old and was recently diagnosed with cancer on Christmas Eve. Elara is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment at BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver and is fighting as hard as she can with her parents by her side. We cannot imagine what this family is going through, but one thing we do know is that we must help in anyway we can."

The event begins at 5 p.m. and features a special burger designed by Elara's family. All sales of the burger over the entire weekend will be donated to the family.

On Saturday night, there will be an opportunity for cash donations and to win prizes donated by local businesses through a silent auction.

The family has also set up a GoFundMe page, which has raised $20,000 of its $30,000 goal.
