New study ranks Canada the world's second best country

Canada second best?

According to a new study by US News and World Report, Canada rates as the second best country in the world.

Only Switzerland rated higher.

The study looked at 73 countries, using nine specific criteria.

"The 2020 Best Countries report and rankings are based on how global perceptions define countries in terms of a number of qualitative characteristics, impressions that have the potential to drive trade, travel and investment and directly affect national economies," the report's methodology states.

"A set of 65 country attributes – terms that can be used to describe a country and that are also relevant to the success of a modern nation – were identified. Attributes by nation were presented in a survey of more than 20,000 people from across the globe. Participants assessed how closely they associated an attribute with a nation."

Canada ranked first with a perfect 10 in terms of quality of life, second in citizenship, third in open for business, 11th in cultural influence and 12th in world power.

We were only 40th in heritage, described as "culturally accessible, has a rich history, has great food, many cultural attractions."

The report, issued once a year, pegged Japan third, Germany fourth and Australia fifth.

Canada was third behind Japan and Switzerland in 2019.
