Emergency response crews on scene near Traut Rd in Kelowna

Fire guts home

UPDATE 10:28 a.m.

One of the residents in the neighbourhood where an early morning fire broke out on Traut Rd. tells Castanet he saw a red Chevrolet Astro van pulling away from the property located at the corner of Traut Rd. and Highway 33, which is located right beside a newly constructed home, "they were packing stuff up and minutes after they left the scene, smoke was billowing out of the house."

The neighbour, who asked to remain anonymous says he has seen people packing up at the house for the past couple of weeks, "they've been packing stuff up in the middle of the night for the past several weeks. I have no doubt the fire was intentionally set."

The same neighbour indicated he has personally seen RCMP, including the Emergency response Team at the same location multiple times since they have been living there.

RCMP on the scene would not comment.

UPDATE 9:13 a.m.

Kelowna Fire Platoon Captain, John Kelly tells Castanet that a fire broke out at 6:30 a.m. in the 1600 block of Traut Rd.

When crews arrived on scene visible flames and smoke could be seen coming from the basement of the home. Fire crews managed to enter the structure and douse the flames. No one was injured as a result of the fire.

The fire is under investigation by both the Kelowna Fire Department and RCMP.

There is a heavy emergency services presence in Black Mountain Thursday morning.

One eyewitness tells Castanet there are multiple fire trucks and police vehicles in the area of Traut Rd, in Black Mountain.

Crews arrived on scene just after 7 a.m. Thursday morning. There are no visible flames. Castanet will have more information when it becomes available.
