19 year old unintended victim in targeted Abbotsford shooting

Mistaken identity murder

Police now say they believe the murder of a young man in Abbotsford a year ago was a case of mistaken identity.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team says in a news release that investigators think Jagvir Malhi was an unintended victim of a targeted shooting.

The team's Sgt. Frank Jang says Malhi was a university student and had no history of criminality, however there were some people in his life who were involved in the Lower Mainland gang conflict.

Malhi, who was 19 years old, was shot and killed near an Abbotsford intersection on Nov. 12, 2018.

A dark blue Acura TL was later found on fire in Surrey on the same afternoon as the shooting and police say they've linked the two incidents.

Police now want to speak with anyone in a white Mazda 3 that investigators believe picked up the occupants of the Acura after the fire was started.
