Highway 93 open again after large rockslide

Hwy open after rockslide

UPDATE 3:50 p.m.

DriveBC reports Highway 93 south of Fairmont Hot Springs has reopened to single-land-alternating traffic. A geotechnical assessment remains underway and will need to be completed before a full reopening. Motorists should expect delays.

ORIGINAL 12 p.m.

A large rock slide has closed Highway 93 indefinitely south of Fairmont Hot Springs, says B.C.’s Ministry of Transportation.

A geotechnical assessment is underway at the slide, which came down off of the Dutch Creek Hoodoos. There is no detour available.

Highway 93 runs north from Cranbrook, linking to small communities such as Canal Flats, Fairmont Hot Springs, Invermere and Radium Hot Springs.

One of the photos of the slide released by DriveBC shows a pickup was caught in the debris flow, but there is no word if there were any injuries. DriveBC will release its next update at 4 p.m.
