The military has sent its guns to B.C. for avalanche control.

Howitzers head west

The military has mobilized, moving large 105-mm Howitzers west from Manitoba.

The annual pilgrimage is part of the Canadian Armed Forces efforts to keep drivers along the Trans-Canada Highway safe as they travel through the sometimes treacherous Rogers Pass.

Since 1961, Operation PALACI has seen Canadian Armed Forces gunners from across Canada come to Rogers Pass, where they shoot the large artillery into key zones, breaking loose avalanches in a controlled fashion, before they cut loose on their own.

On Friday, the military posted to Facebook that the large guns have left their summer home in Manitoba, and are en route to B.C.
