2 months for Weinstein trial

The trial against disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein is expected to continue for up to two months.

According to a recent court filing, jurors have been advised that the trial will be a lengthy procedure, reported Variety. With proceedings set to begin on Jan. 6 in the New York Supreme Court, the jury pool will be told to expect the trial to last until the first week of March.

The former Miramax boss faces five charges of rape and sexual assault from two incidents in 2006 and 2013. Four other accusers are also expected to testify at the trial, including actress Annabella Sciorra. If convicted, Weinstein could face life in prison.

Additionally, the producer is also facing 12 lawsuits accusing him of sexual harassment, sexual assault, and retaliation, with attorneys seeking to halt discovery in two of those cases for the duration of the criminal trial.

In letters to the federal judges handling the cases, attorney Elior Shiloh said Weinstein would be heavily involved in trial preparation beginning on 1 December, and would be unavailable to assist his civil lawyers in responding to discovery requests. Shiloh asked that the judge order discovery to resume on 1 April.

"Mr. Weinstein cannot be compelled to respond to interrogatories or give deposition testimony in this civil sexual assault matter at the same time he is standing trial for criminal sexual assault," Shiloh argued.

A decision is yet to be made on proceedings regarding the civil lawsuits.

Weinstein has denied all allegations against him.
