B.C. filmmaker travels around Canada to interview WWII veterans

13 months interviewing Vets

Eric Brunt prepared all the essentials for his road trip across the country to speak with as many remaining Second World War veterans as he could.

The 26-year-old missed the opportunity to ask his grandfather those questions, and that inspired his trip, reports CTV News

"I knew he was a veteran, but he never really spoke about his experiences; no one ever interviewed him. When he passed away, I thought, 'Gosh, that's a lot of family history we just lost, just like that,'" he said.

Brunt departed Victoria in May 2018 and started calling local legions to ask if any veterans would be willing to speak with him.

In 13 months, he interviewed more than 400 veterans, including one who served with his great-uncle.

Brunt has learned that since then, approximately 60 of those veterans have passed away.

"The torch is kind of being carried to me to make sure their stories are being told in the best way possible and I want to make sure as many people can hear their stories," he said.

"They're such a humble generation and in their opinion, they didn’t do much. (They always think) the guy next to them did a lot more than they ever did," he said. "I'm close to the age that they would've been when they went to serve and it’s a real opportunity for them to open up."

The interviews will be compiled into a documentary titled Last Ones Standing. Brunt plans to finish the documentary in 2020 to mark the 74th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

To support his project, he has set up an online fundraiser.
