Protest held in Vancouver in support of Syrian Kurds

Protest supports Kurds

Over 100 people took to the streets of downtown Vancouver on Sunday calling on the federal government to do more to condemn the Turkish invasion of northern Syria.

“It’s a demographic genocide and we need to stop that,” Mariwan Jaaf, one of the event's organizers told CTV News. “Stop betraying the Kurds.”

Immediately following the pullout of American troops, Turkey invaded northern Syria attacking Kurdish forces. Despite a ceasefire, fighting and shelling has continued, with both sides accusing the other of violating the rules.

“It really was terrible for me,” said Fatemeh Richarai, a refugee who came to Canada from Iran 13 years ago. “I couldn’t sleep at night because I thought those innocent children [are] like my children.”

“Many progressives in turkey are actually pro-Kurdish,” said Cavlan Erengezgin, an ethnic Turk, explaining people are scared to speak out within Turkey.

“The moment you talk about it, the moment you even post something on Facebook, you are getting arrested,” she said.

Organizers called on the Canadian government to join European nations in placing an arms embargo on Turkey.
