It was cold in the Okanagan Wednesday night – but not record-breaking cold.

Environment Canada meteorologist Matt MacDonald says: "This morning was the coldest morning in the last few days; at the Kelowna airport it dipped down to -6.3 C. That was flirting with the record of -7.5 C set in 2009."

Kelowna was the cold spot in the Okanagan.

Vancouver set a new record low with temperatures dropping down to -0.8 C – breaking a record set back in 1916 of -0.6 C.

Normal lows for this time of year in the Okanagan are 3 C, a full 8 or 9 degrees higher than what we have been getting so far this month.

MacDonald says this is likely the coldest snap we'll see for a while.

"Tonight, we're definitely dipping below zero again, probably -3 C or -4 C. The current record for Kelowna overnight is -8 C."

After that, as we head into the Thanksgiving long weekend, one of the busiest travel weekends of the year, things return to normal.

"Highs of about 11 C or 12 C and lows around 3 C or 4 C. We do see a cooler system push through on Sunday evening into Thanksgiving Monday. We'll probably see a couple of centimetres of snow on the Okanagan Connector, but just probably showers at lower elevations. Monday we get back into that northerly flow – so it looks like we'll be plunging back below zero again starting Monday night into Tuesday."

MacDonald reminds everyone travelling through the mountain passes on the long weekend to "definitely have those snow tires on."
