Sun throttle Huskers

Alex Douglas threw for three touchdowns Sunday.

The Okanagan Sun scored on four straight drives in the second half en route to a 40-0 throttling of the visiting Valley Huskers on a wet afternoon at the Apple Bowl.

Quarterback Alex Douglas threw for three touchdowns and backup Dominic Britton hit Conor Richard in stride for a 65-yard strike in the final quarter in leading the Sun to the victory.

The defence forced three turnovers, including a pair of Garret Cape interceptions, and created havoc for both Husker quarterbacks all game long.

And, the offence clicked, especially during a dominant second half, rolling up more than 400 yards in offence.

On all three sides of the ball, it was their most complete game.

"Probably. We were better on offence, we were better on defence, and special teams was closer to the speed we need to be playing," said head coach Jamie Boreham.

"By no means is it there. There were penalties that were frustrating. We need to start getting really good at the things we are good at, instead of just being good at the things we are good at."

The game started slowly for the offrence. They managed only a 27-yard Isaac Wegner field goal and a conceded safety with the Huskers punting from deep inside their own end zone.

Things were worse for the Huskers, who were held to minus 11 yards of total offence in the opening quarter, thanks in part to a pair of sacks from Kayel Bergland.

Cape's first interception on the second play of the fifth play of the second quarter gave the Sun the ball on the Huskers 18.

On the next play, Richard stretched out to make a spectacular one handed grab, and scampered 18 yards for his first of two touchdowns on the afternoon.

The Sun led 12-0 at the break.

They caught fire in the third, thanks in part to a heads up play by Wegner.

After the Sun were forced to kick the ball away, Wegner alertly darted down field and recovered his own punt, giving the Sun the ball on the Husker 41.

Five plays later, Kelton Kouri barreled in from the one.

The Sun also hit paydirt on their next two possessions, also started inside the Chilliwack end.

Douglas needed just three plays before hitting a wide open Kouri in the end zone from 32 yards out, they capped a short four-play drive with a 20 yard strike to Chan Lual, as the Sun built a 33-0 lead after three quarters.

Britton wrapped up the scoring with a perfect 65-yard strike to Richard.

The  Sun rookie also showed a deft touch in completing another 29 yard strike late in the game.

The Sun amassed 412 yards of total offence, compared with just 154 for the struggling Huskers.

The Sun have now won two in a row and are 4-0 overall against the Huskers and Kamloops, who have combined for just one win on the season

They are 0-3 against their next three opponents, Langley, Westshore and the Raiders, who are all above them in the standings.

The Sun travel to Langley next weekend to face the 7-0 Rams, a team that edged the Sun in the dying moments two weeks ago at the Apple Bowl.

"We played everyone tough. We are young, and we're getting better every week," said Boreham of the upcoming challenge.

"Langley is a test, but we played them tight too. We are going into their park so we better show up. They continue to say they are the best team in the league, and we need to step and figure out if we can play with them again."
